Three time Olympian (‘88, ’92 & ’94), 5 time World Championship Team member (‘87,‘89,‘91,93 & ’95) and World Cup racer, 11 time US National Champion , 2 time World Junior Team member (‘81, ’82). Post racing: worked for Nordic Equipment Co, coaches ski camps, clinic instructor and has coached for MVNT since 1997 and been the junior team director since 2012-13 season!
Grace Butler
Grace ButlerPolar Bear Lead Coach
Grace Butler is from Waterbury Center, Vermont where she Nordic skied and ran for Harwood Union High School and VTXC under the tutelage of coaches John and Ryan Kerrigan. She left the East to attend Whitman College in Walla Walla from 2014-2018. Through her field study of public lands and natural resource policy at Whitman she was introduced to the Methow Valley and was smitten with the place and community. She is ecstatic to be here and to spend time with young skiers who are learning to love the sport and love the outdoors. Grace leads the Polar Bears!
Laura McCabe
Laura McCabeWolverine Lead Coach
Laura McCabe is a 2 time Olympian ’94 and ’98. On the Fisher/Solomon Factory team for 11 years winning numerous marathons throughout the country including the American Birkebiner. Laura has been coaching the Methow Valley Nordic Team for 23 years and was head coach for 6 years before she had her own children. Laura leads the Wolverines.
Heide Andersen
Heide AndersenLynx Lead Coach
Heide has been a MVNT coach for five years since moving to the Methow Valley from Colorado 8 years ago. She raced in junior nationals several times while racing in high school in Minnesota and qualified for NCAA championships while racing for Williams College in MA. She also competed for the province of Vienna, racing in Austrian championships and other european races. After graduate school, she raced for the Peltonen/Exel and Madshus/Alpina teams as a marathon skier, including competing in the elite wave in the American Birkebeiner. Besides Nordic skiing, Heide also competed as a professional mountain bike racer while living in Utah and Colorado. She enjoys backcountry skiing and riding her horse when she’s not on her nordic skis or her bike. Heide leads the Lynxes!
Peter Leonard
Peter LeonardSnow Leopard leader
2019-20 will be Pete’s 16th winter of coaching XC skiing, and his second with MVN after becoming Executive Director last year. He spent his previous 12 years coaching and building NSCF-FXC program in Fairbanks, AK, and 2 years prior to that as assistant coach with NYSEF in Lake Placid, NY. He is a US Ski and Snowboard L100 Technique Instructor, and has coached at 15 Junior Nationals, 10 Senior Nationals, 2 World Juniors, 1 U18 Nordic Nations Cup and a bunch of Regional Elite Group Camps. He loves going on adventures in wild places, and helping others find fitness, personal growth and enjoyment through active outdoor pursuits. Pete is the leader of the Snow Leopards.
Katharine Bill
Katharine BillArctic Fox leader
Katharine started Nordic skiing in high school and competed for the Rocky Mountain Division as a way to train for her love of mountaineering. She has a Masters in Forestry (Yale FES), a BA in Environmental Biology (University of Colo.) and has a teaching certificate in science for grades 5-12. She is passionate about the natural world of the Methow and the North Cascades, which has led her to work for many land conservation organizations in the Methow including the Forest Service and the Methow Conservancy, first as Stewardship Director (2000-2002) and then as Executive Director (2002-2007). She went on to lead conservation projects for Trout Unlimited, the Okanogan Land Trust, the Trust for Public Land and Classroom in Bloom, and also worked as a ski and climbing guide for several years for North Cascades Mountain Guides. Katharine now works at Methow Valley Elementary, as their Family and Community Engagement Coordinator, focusing on after-school enrichment, internships and volunteer opportunities. She and her husband Flash have two daughters (Sisu-9, Neva-5). Katharine guides the Arctic Foxes on their winter adventures.
