The 5th annual Winthrop Ski Derby is a 15km and 30km classic technique race at the Sun Mountain trail system, with start and finish at Chickadee Trailhead. Race entry includes an awards party with lunch and door prizes, in addition to a unique race course and support. Come on up and enjoy the wonderfully varied trails of Sun Mountain, and a great post-race party afterwards!
Each race distance will have a mass start, with the 30km race leaving at 9am and the 15km race leaving 5 minutes later. The 15km course is rolling and utilizes most of the lower trails. The course traverses excellent classic ski terrain with small hills and smooth transitions. The 30km course is unique and offers the challenge of skiing in more mountainous terrain. The first half of the 30km race climbs to Thompson Pass via Lower Inside Passage and Meadowlark trails, then descends Thompson Road before beginning the second half on the same trails as the 15km race. Timing for both races will end at 11:45 am.
The awards party and lunch will be held at Carlos 1800 Mexican Restaurant in Winthrop, 12-1:30 pm. Racers and volunteers will need to present their lunch ticket obtained at bib pick-up. Non-racers and racers who forget their ticket will need to pay for lunch. Drinks will be extra for all.
This event is an all-volunteer effort. Please consider helping MV Nordic in putting on this race. If you, a family member, or friend would like to volunteer, please get in touch. We treat volunteers to lunch at our awards party!

Racers and spectators: Get the free Webscorer app for your smartphone and get race results by Bluetooth transfer at the finish line. We will also be posting results on paper at Chickadee, and results will also be available from Webscorer.com beginning about noon. The Chickadee Trailhead does not have cell coverage, but we will post the race results online as soon as we get down the mountain on our way to the awards party.
A Methow Trails pass is not required for this event. However, if you plan to ski after the race (i.e. Saturday afternoon), you will need to purchase a trail pass, which can be purchased by Derby participants at the reduced rate of $10 as part of your online registration or in person at the race venue.
