SUMMER PROGRAMS

Summer Opportunities for 11-18 Year Olds

Summer Training

For summer 2023 we will be offering two training groups.  One will be targeted at U14 and U16 skiers and the other at U16 and older skiers.

The objective with our training groups is to provide each skier with a situation where they are thriving and getting the right level of support and challenge at any given time in their development.  This means providing flexibility during transition ages, and providing opportunities for both groups to train together at times.

(Please note: for summer training we shift to the following winter’s age groups.  U14 is YOB 2010-11, U16 YOB 2008-9, U18 YOB 2006-7, etc.)

General Notes

Transportation If carpooling isn’t an option for kids in need of transportation, we’re willing to provide a one direction shuttle through the Upper Valley to help skiers get to practice.  Email if you think you’ll need this to help us facilitate planning!
Financial Aid Need-based financial aid is available through our online applications.
Equipment rollerskis are utilized by both training groups.  The younger group focuses on skate rollerskiing, while the older group utilizes both techniques.  Winthrop Mountain Sports currently has a great deal available on rollerskis and the program has several pairs available to borrow.  Email if you think you might need to borrow a pair.  Additional equipment includes running shoes, a hydration belt (preferably one that doesn’t bounce too much when running!), bounding poles, rollerski poles (with special tips), bright clothing and a bike helmet (for rollerskiing).

U14/16 Summer Training: June 21 – Aug 24

Workouts will involve skate roller skiing (we may add in classic later if it makes sense for the group, but the initial priority will be skate to work on agility and the foundations of safe roller skiing), running, strength training, specific foot (aka ski walking, moosehoofing, bounding), etc.

General Weekly Schedule

Weds 9 or 9:30 AM (for 1.5 hr) movement-focused workout (aka agility, balance, coordination, speed, strength).
Thursday 8 AM rollerski or longer foot-based workout (this will be our option for mountain adventures).  Sessions could be up to a couple of hours or even up to a full day.

Athletes should be active outside of training, but we try to leave a lot of flexibility with this age group to facilitate independence, self-reliance, multiple pathways, etc.

Camps:

For U14s, we are planning the Plain Camp Aug 21-24 as the culminating experience of the summer.  2nd Year U14s and U16s who are ready, will be eligible to attend the MVNT Camp Aug 13-17.  While tuition will cover day to day expenses for summer training, there will be additional costs associated with these camps.
